TEACHING ARTIST SESSION CATEGORIES
This multi-step activity introduces students to the basics of observational drawing and mixed media painting. Students will first sketch fresh flowers in pencil, then add crayon for a wax-resist effect, and finally bring their compositions to life using watercolor. This is art in layers, and creativity unfolds like a flower opening.
In this festive session, students will design and paint their own holiday greeting cards using watercolor techniques. Students will explore winter themes, color palettes, and personal expression while creating meaningful art to share with loved ones. This session is making the world a more beautiful and expressive place one card at a time!
Maybe Jean-Michel Basquiat never met a dinosaur, but he had a dinosaur-sized vision and new take on the world! This session invites students to explore emotion, symbolism, and color while learning about a groundbreaking artist who transformed the art world! Students will create expressive dinosaur artworks using oil pastels and watercolor.
Join Crawfish and friends for a toe-tappin’, hand-clappin’ Zydeco adventure straight from the heart of Louisiana! In this interactive session, kids sing, dance, and laugh their way through fun YouTube hits like “Zydeco 123,” “Crawfish Shuffle,” “Don’t Eat My Fruit Loops,” and more. Each song brings a mix of rhythm, storytelling, and movement, while teaching children about Louisiana culture, Creole roots, and the joy of Zydeco music.
We have all heard the term “self-love.” But have we ever explored what it really means? Or used a poetic structure to commit it to paper? This session offers an opportunity for both! Students will engage in a guided discussion on what self-love means and why it is important. Then, they will complete a writing exercise focused on using couplets to create self-motivation poems. The theme: tolerance. The artistic medium: a class poetry album. In this workshop designed to encourage students to be creative and work together on a common goal, classes will engage in creative writing, discussions on tolerance, and have a brief audio recording workshop. The class will write and record a final Poetry Album. This artist is only available on Fridays, so chat with them about availability after booking.
Day 1: Students will separate into groups and select “beats” from a given list to write and record to. Students will begin the writing process.
Day 2: Students will finish writing their poems/songs. We will begin recording students’ creations.
Day 3: Students will finish recording. We will finish class by listening to what the class has collectively created.
Aren’t all words “spoken”? So what is “spoken word poetry” and how does it differ? Students in this session will internalize that! They will be introduced to spoken word poetry through discussion, spoken word videos, and live performance. Question & answer time will be given after the performance, so students can free their minds and let the questions follow. This program breaks down the four elements of Hip-Hop culture which are: DJing, Graffiti, MCing and Breakdancing. If booked during February (Black History Month), an additional discussion of Hip-Hop’s importance to Black History is added. The goal of this program is to explain how Hip-Hop is more than just a genre of music and provide some history on the culture. Everything discussed will be demonstrated LIVE!
It’s Breakdancing 101! Take a deep dive into the history of Breakdancing and discuss some musical history relative to the dance. Then, it’s time to get active! Various dance moves and styles will be demonstrated live for the audience. A dance workshop makes up the majority of this session so a gym, cafeteria or similar space is required.
In this innovative session, the elements of Hip-Hop culture are used to address the different types of bullying present in the lives of today’s youth. The overall theme is “Bullying Ends After Talking,” which allows students to express their personal experiences, concerns, and maybe even share some advice for their fellow peers while they are guided and entertained along the way. The entertainment elements of DJing, MCing, and Breakdancing are performed live for the audience throughout the show. This is a social and emotional journey, and a musical one as well!
