Natural Egg Dyeing (K-5)

Don’t wait for Easter to buy a pack of colored tablets from the grocery store! Natural egg dyeing has been around for centuries in Europe. Our French ancestors brought this method of dyeing eggs to Louisiana in the late 1700s, and some farm families in Acadiana still practice it today. In this lesson, students will “go back in time” by learning this technique to create a truly unique egg.

Jean-Michel Basquiat Dinosaurs (3-8)

Maybe Jean-Michel Basquiat never met a dinosaur, but he had a dinosaur-sized vision and new take on the world! This session invites students to explore emotion, symbolism, and color while learning about a groundbreaking artist who transformed the art world! Students will create expressive dinosaur artworks using oil pastels and watercolor.

DJing & The Art of Turntablism (5-12)

Ready for a needle drop? This session takes a deep dive into the beginnings of DJing and its contribution to culture. Musicality and music theory are discussed from a DJ’s point of view. Various Turntablism techniques that include mixing, scratching, beat juggling, and body tricks will be demonstrated live for the audience! This unique program can be scaled up or down to fit the space provided, so please communicate with the artist about tailoring your presentation to your needs.

Hip-Hop History LIVE (K-12)

This program breaks down the four elements of Hip-Hop culture which are: DJing, Graffiti, MCing and Breakdancing. If booked during February (Black History Month), an additional discussion of Hip-Hop’s importance to Black History is added. The goal of this program is to explain how Hip-Hop is more than just a genre of music and provide some history on the culture. Everything discussed will be demonstrated LIVE!

Breakin’ It Down: The History of Breakdancing (K-12)

It’s Breakdancing 101! Take a deep dive into the history of Breakdancing and discuss some musical history relative to the dance. Then, it’s time to get active! Various dance moves and styles will be demonstrated live for the audience. A dance workshop makes up the majority of this session so a gym, cafeteria or similar space is required.

Clave & Grooove: A Fusion of Rhythm and Dance (1-8)

Ready, Clave, Go! Discover the rhythmic heartbeat of Latin and Afro-Cuban music in this high-energy, interactive session. Students will learn the foundational clave rhythm (traditionally counted as 1-2-3-12) using authentic wooden percussion sticks. This session bridges the gap between live percussion and modern street dance, demonstrating how this ancestral pulse heavily influences house dance and hip-hop foundations.

The History of African Americans in Louisiana through Music (9-12)

Get ready for a musical feast and a historical journey! Journey from the vibrant rhythms of jazz to the soulful melodies of blues in this session that delves into the rich cultural heritage that has shaped American music today. Through a listening session and discussion, students will learn about the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in Louisiana and how their experiences have been reflected in the music they created. Groups will examine the influence of slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Great Migration on the development of musical genres such as gospel, zydeco, and hip-hop. When it is time to get hands-on, students will also have the opportunity to create their own musical projects inspired by the history and traditions of Louisiana’s African American community.

Georgia O’Keeffe’s Flowers (3-12)

No one saw a flower the way artist Georgia O’Keeffe did. She looked closely, depicted flowers on a large scale, and over the course of seven decades, this modernist painter changed the art world. In this session, students will draw their own flowers, large and up-close. This project enables us to see all parts of the flower and emphasizes warm and cool colors.
