Clementine Hunter’s Zinnias (3-12)

No one taught her, so she taught herself and made her art her own. In doing so, Louisiana artist Clementine Hunter developed a visually distinctive style and vividly depicted plantation life in the early 20th Century. In this session, students will learn more about Clementine’s world. How, they will learn, did she arrive at her ideas of plantation life and her vision for depicting people, animals, and everyday life on a plantation? Then, students will create a piece of art in Clementine’s style and pay homage to her work.

Short-Term Residency option:

Day 1: After learning a brief biography of the artist, students draw vases in the shape of their choosing, and backgrounds are painted onto paper bags.

Day 2: Students add stems and leaves with oil pastels to their vase. Then they paint their vases. We will create different values of color and paint the petals of our flowers.

Day 3: Students can decorate their vase using chinoiserie or another style. Then, they can add details and monogrammed signatures similar to the style of Hunter.

Georgia O’Keeffe’s Flowers (3-12)

No one saw a flower the way artist Georgia O’Keeffe did. She looked closely, depicted flowers on a large scale, and over the course of seven decades, this modernist painter changed the art world. In this session, students will draw their own flowers, large and up-close. This project enables us to see all parts of the flower and emphasizes warm and cool colors.
