It’s a starry, snowy night! Students will learn to fold and cut beautiful paper stars or snowflakes (depending on the season), glue them onto a background, and add sparkly glitter. The teaching artist will manage glitter to reduce the mess in your classroom!
TEACHING ARTIST SESSION CATEGORIES
Single Session
Scissors Skills (K-3)
As you may have experienced, younger students are increasingly struggling with scissor projects. This class aims to give them a good basis for this important coordination and creative skill! The teaching artist will give basic instructions in scissor usage and safety, introduce different kinds of cuts, and allow students to complete a simple cut-out project. This session is tailored to the skills of that age group. No one will come out of this looking like Edward Scissorhands, but instead, with better scissor coordination!
The Art of Surrealism: A Mixed Media Journey (1-5)
Get ready to explore a new concept, engage with artistic materials, and tell a visual story! In this session, students will examine what surrealism was and is today. They will randomly choose cutouts of objects and words to serve as the basis for their own surrealist mixed-media collage. Using acrylic markers and the cutouts they chose, they will be challenged to interconnect these objects to creatively express their own narrative. As they work, the students will apply and internalize the principles of surrealism, and discover how they have allowed artists to express themselves in unique ways.
French Beading (2-5)
Traditional craft time! French beading techniques were brought to Louisiana from our French ancestors. This hands-on demonstration includes how to string beads onto wire, how to loop shapes, and then finally, how to pull all of the parts together to complete the final project. This lost art is hard to “bead”!
DJing & The Art of Turntablism (5-12)
Ready for a needle drop? This session takes a deep dive into the beginnings of DJing and its contribution to culture. Musicality and music theory are discussed from a DJ’s point of view. Various Turntablism techniques that include mixing, scratching, beat juggling, and body tricks will be demonstrated live for the audience! This unique program can be scaled up or down to fit the space provided, so please communicate with the artist about tailoring your presentation to your needs.
Telling Your Story on the Djembe (PK-5)
The drum has always been used to communicate, and everyone has a story to tell! In this session, students will learn first that the most important thing in communication is really learning how to LISTEN! Once students know the importance of how to play together and be silent when others are playing their part, they will learn the three basic rhythms on the djembe. There will be lots of teamwork, but in this class, participants will also look at how a solo performer can tell a story and make it come to life.
The Drum Circle (PK-5)
Playing for peace in the world, playing for a sick friend, or playing with the hope that everyone does well on testing…but what do these have to do with drums? Well, they are all intentions, and drum circles come together with intention. Students in this session will set their own intentions while they learn three simple hand movements on the djembe or other percussive instruments sitting together in a circle. They will learn how to play the rhythms they feel while thinking of others. At the same time, they will practice staying musically in time/in count with the rest of the group. Drumming circles build community and keep communities strong. If these are intentions for your classroom, consider this session!
Moving Through Testing Anxiety (PK-8)
Ours can be an anxious world, and taking tests has never been fun. Knowing calming techniques can make that all better! Support students through high-stakes seasons with movement-based tools to release tension and reset the nervous system. Activities in this creative movement session promote regulation, focus, and emotional awareness during testing time.
Festival International (PK-8)
Across the globe, dance is not only an art form, but a way to communicate. In this session, classes celebrate global cultures through music and movement inspired by Lafayette’s Festival International. Students can explore rhythms and dances from around the world by learning simple choreography based on current artists featured at the festival. Keep calm and dance on!
Number and Letter Recognition (PK-1)
Movement practices meet educational foundations in this workshop. Students practice body awareness while learning letters and numbers through a kinesthetic lens. Students will form and recognize letters and numbers using full-body movement. What a way to learn!
