This session takes students on a fun and interactive journey through the heartbeat of Louisiana music history, the drums of zydeco. Originating in the Creole communities of Southwest Louisiana, zydeco blends African, Caribbean, blues, rock& roll and R&B influences into a high-energy dance style that’s powered by rhythm.
Students will explore how zydeco drummers create different grooves that shape the feel of the music. From the classic 2-step beat that drives the dance floor, to the smooth zydeco waltz, the funk-inspired modern grooves, and the fast trailride rhythms, kids will see how each style makes people move in a unique way.
Through clapping, stomping, body percussion, and simple dance steps, participants will build these grooves together as a group. Older students will go deeper, learning how zydeco drumming evolved over time — from the steady backbeat of Clifton Chenier’s era to the funky syncopation of modern bands.
By the end of the session, students will understand that the groove is the heartbeat of Louisiana zydeco music. They’ll experience firsthand how different drum styles create energy, mood, and culture — and why zydeco drumming is one of Louisiana’s most exciting musical traditions.
